USD 383 Board of Education

June 24, 2009

Kathy Dzewaltowski, Observer

Regular meeting:

The board received a report about the activities going on with the building committees at Amanda Arnold and Ogden Elementary Schools, which have been meeting and discussing schematic designs for the schools as part of the bond construction projects.  Amanda Arnold's committee liked a design which included a "safe room" (a specially reinforced room which would provide protection from severe weather).  The board expressed concerns about including a "safe room" because the board had previously discussed "safe rooms" and had cut them from the bond list due to costs and due to the possibility that the district couldn't provide them in all of the schools.  Pete Paukstelis said there were items higher in priority than "safe rooms" which had been eliminated and that the board might rather fund.  Other board members expressed similar opinions and reiterated that the board had discussed at length the need to provide equity.  The plans preferred by Amanda Arnold's and Ogden's committees will be presented to the board at its July 1st meeting.
